My court date is coming

Feeling frightened as the date gets closer is completely natural. Let's make things feel a little more manageable together.

A simple preparation checklist

  • Confirm the date, time and court address.
  • Plan your journey and allow extra time.
  • Ask about a pre-trial visit and any special measures, such as screens or a video link.
  • Arrange someone to be with you before or after, if you'd like.

What to take

  • Any letters or reference numbers.
  • Water, snacks and any medication.
  • Something comforting — a soft item, a notebook, headphones.
  • Tissues and a warm layer.

What to expect

  • There may be a lot of waiting. That's normal.
  • You can usually wait in a separate area away from the defendant — ask the Witness Service.
  • You can ask for a break if you need one.

Grounding when fear rises

  • Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 6. Repeat a few times.
  • Press your feet into the floor and notice the ground holding you.
  • Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear.

Questions for the people supporting you

  • Who will meet me on the day?
  • Can I read my statement again beforehand?
  • What happens after I give evidence?

You do not have to cope with the fear alone. We'd like to be beside you through this.
