You Are Not Alone

Before, During & After Court

You don't have to face it alone

Simple ideas for each stage. This is general information, not legal advice.

  1. Stage 1

    Before court

    Comforting items
A notebook to jot down questions and feelings, and reassurance cards for anxious moments.
    Practical reminders
Ask about a pre-trial visit to see the court, and about special measures such as screens or giving evidence by video link.
    Professional services
Victim Support and the Citizens Advice Witness Service can explain what to expect. An ISVA (Independent Sexual Violence Adviser) may be available through your local Rape Crisis centre or SARC.
  2. Stage 2

    During court

    Comforting items
Cosy socks, tissues and a small sensory item for waiting times.
    Practical reminders
Bring water, a snack, any medication and something calming. You can ask for breaks.
    Professional services
The Witness Service can often support you on the day. Your ISVA or police contact can answer questions.
  3. Stage 3

    After court

    Comforting items
Space to rest. The notebook can hold whatever comes next.
    Practical reminders
Whatever the outcome, it is normal to feel exhausted or unsettled. Be gentle with yourself.
    Professional services
Rape Crisis, Victim Support and your GP can help you find ongoing support.
